Water

There are a number of perennial springs giving cool fresh water even in the height of summer. These were carefully controlled and fed a number of artificial reservoirs within the city. At the south-west, in front of the military area and between the palace and the stables, is a stone lined pool, called the At Göl or the Suluk Göl, with an artificial bank and central sluice on the north-west side. The stream is joined by others as it makes its way through the centre of the city before flowing out through the "Water Gate" at the lowest point in the west wall. An impressive bank-side reservoir, the Büyük Göl, was constructed in the lower, flat area of the city. A number of lesser storage facilities can be seen in various parts of the city. Many of the urban blocks contain small artificial pools to collect run-off; these appear to have been architectural features as well serving a utilitarian purpose, one, apparently unfinished, being in the "military area".

Sets of bank-side reservoirs were also made along the streams flowing down the slopes opposite the west wall of the city.
